While most students are more concerned with getting a tan than boosting their resumes, you’re setting yourself apart already, by considering the idea of a summer job. Even working part-time through the summer will guarantee a paycheck, and the extra experience may be just the boost you need to earn your dream job down the road.
Tip #1 – Start Looking Early
Since most colleges let out about the same time, the best jobs are sure to go early, so it pays to be prepared. Take the initiative and start looking for jobs around June so you have plenty of time to set up face-to-face interviews and find that perfect summer position.
Tip #2 – Stay in Your Field of Study
If you are going to be working anyways, it may as well add to your resume for after graduation. If you are a journalism or public relations major, look for jobs at local newspapers or even freelance work for well-known blogs. If your interests lie in hospitality or entertainment field look for work at an amusement park or resort. Although your summer job might not be exactly what you are looking for after graduation, it can easily help open the door to a potential career by showing your initiative.
Tip #3 – Dress for Success
Even though you will only be at your summer job for a few months, treat it as though you would your dream position. Whether you are just going into a store to pick up an application or going in for a face-to-face interview, you should always look your best. After all, you never know who you may meet and your first impression should always be a strong one. Make sure that your attire is both clean, wrinkle free and appropriate.
Tip #4 – Don’t Forget Your Resume
Although you may only be asking for an application, there are usually opportunities to drop of your resume and look prepared. Keep in mind that a presentable resume is just as important as a presentable attire when looking for summer jobs. Ensure that you bring multiple copies of your easy to read and unfolded resume in case your potential employer asks for an extra copy (which is known to happen).
